What Title Professionals Need to Know for 2025 1099-S Filing
First of all, make sure these dates are firmly on your calendar:
Penalties for late or incorrect 1099-S filings can quickly add up. The IRS assesses fines per form, with the amounts only increasing the longer a filing is delayed. For instance, returns filed within 30 days of the deadline may incur a smaller penalty, but filings submitted later in the year result in significantly higher fees.
So, staying on top of deadlines is critical to avoid these potential penalties. That’s why you must ensure you submit on time. The IRS will automatically grant a single 30-day extension if requested by the deadline. A second 30-day extension is possible but requires approval.
Our advice? Don’t procrastinate!
Important Reminder: The IRS will accept no more than 10 paper 1099-S Copy A forms. If you’re filing more than 10 forms, you must do so by electronic submission through the IRS FIRE system.
Important Pre-Filing Information You Need to Know
If you plan to file electronically (and especially if it’s your first time), there are a few key steps you need to take well before March.
1. Apply for (or confirm) your TCC
You’ll need a Transmitter Control Code (TCC) issued by the IRS. This code authorizes you to submit your 1099-S forms through the FIRE system. You can fill out an application for TCC at IRS.gov, and create a FIRE login account here beginning January 15, 2026.
Once you have your TCC, the rest of the process can be achieved using SoftPro’s Pro1099 software.
2. Double-check your filing application
Additionally, the IRS requires that your TCC, Employer Identification Number (EIN), and business name match exactly as they appear in the FIRE system. So, we recommend logging into FIRE well in advance of the March 31 deadline to confirm credentials and resolve any inconsistencies early on.
3. Create your IRS TAX file
Generating your 2025 IRS TAX file early gives you time to review, correct, and finalize your submission without having to scramble at the last minute.
